On August 20, the vibrant energy of cross-cultural friendship lit up Budapest as participants from the Ukrainian-Korean English Camp arrived in the Hungarian capital for a meaningful day of exchange with local youth. Coinciding with Hungary’s celebrated national holiday, the visit brought together 37 participants from the English camp and 17 young Hungarians, weaving a tapestry of shared stories, international camaraderie, and festive celebration.
The day began at the Peace Embassy, where warm smiles and open arms welcomed the international delegates. Over a shared lunch, breaking bread together instantly dissolved geographical and linguistic boundaries. The atmosphere swelled with curiosity as organizers formally introduced the camp’s vision and day’s itinerary, setting a reflective and hopeful tone for the afternoon ahead.
A core highlight of the gathering was the Shimjeong Cafe pair-sharing session. Rooted in the Korean concept of Shimjeong—referring to the deepest heart and emotional connection—this intimate setup invited the youth to pair up and engage in authentic, heartfelt conversations. Participants opened up about their backgrounds, personal journeys, and aspirations, discovering profound commonalities despite their diverse origins. Ukrainian, Korean, and Hungarian voices blended seamlessly, transforming theoretical cultural differences into genuine personal bonds.
Following these deep exchanges at the Peace Embassy, the group stepped out into the bustling streets of Budapest. The afternoon featured an invigorating city tour through historic avenues and iconic landmarks. The joint stroll allowed the youth to continue their conversations in an informal, lively setting, taking photos and building friendships along the way.
As dusk fell over the Danube, the day culminated in a breathtaking finale. Positioned along the scenic riverbank, the group joined local crowds to watch the grand fireworks display for the Hungarian national holiday. As brilliant bursts of light painted the night sky, illuminating the Parliament building and the historic bridges, the youth stood side by side—a powerful symbol of hope, unity, and connection across nations.
