Father’s Speech at Leaders’ Conference on November 23, 1994 at East Garden, Irvington, New York
Do you think that the world out there is good or bad? (Bad.) How about America? How about yourselves? All of human history has been filled with struggle and war. Fighting and war are bad because, when you struggle, you always decline below the normal level. On the other hand, when people work together in unity their level always rises.
In reality, you are still in a bad state because your mind and body are still struggling. Is that not true? (Yes.) This fight between mind and body started with the first human ancestors. If we reach beyond our original ancestors to God, do we still find struggles between mind and body? (No.) God is an Absolute Being. Within an Absolute Being, there is no fight or struggle. If God is not struggling and fighting, why has humankind been struggling all this time?
Our lives started from the very place at which our father and mother made love. Therefore, we can conclude that when our father and mother made love to give us life, their love was not totally centered upon God. Rather, there was an element of struggle and confrontation in their union. Their love was not pure enough and, therefore, a false life and a false lineage emerged. False love, false life and false lineage contradict God’s original love, life and lineage. That is what we call the human fall. Without the fall, humankind would have begun with true love, life and lineage.
Our conscience is directly related to God vertically, but within fallen people is another false plus, creating internal contradiction and conflict. False love indicates the existence of a false plus. We can trace the false love, false life and false lineage back to Adam and Eve, our original ancestors.
As we know, God created people because of love. Divine love and human love come together through our love-making organs. Have you ever touched love or seen love? Is love something we can touch or see? We cannot touch or see love, but we can feel it. We cannot see or touch life. We cannot see the seed of human lineage with our eyes. We cannot touch our conscience. We cannot touch or see God.
The role of the conscience
Where is God? Where is heaven? Where does God dwell? (In the conscience.) Heaven means the state of holiness, the highest and most glorious place. God is the root of love, life, lineage and conscience. God dwells in the innermost depths of your conscience. If you pray seriously and reach a state of true spirituality, you will be able to communicate with God directly. In this state when you say, “God, where are You?” Heavenly Father will respond from the center of your being, “I am here. What do you want?” (Laughter.)
When you are sitting alone and absolutely still, do you feel your love, life and lineage actively at work within yourself? Everyone has five senses; however, these senses exist not for our sake alone, but rather for the sake of others. In the same way, everything within this universe exists for something or someone else.
When God created the world, He first created the environment, with sun, air, water and soil. Our eyes represent the sun, our nose the air, and our mouth the water and soil. Looking in another way, our forehead represents God, our nose represents Adam and Eve, and our mouth represents the creation. The number of teeth is significant: there are four directions or four corners; four times eight, which is the number representing a new beginning, makes 32, the number of teeth.
We all have love, life and conscience within ourselves. Suppose that you feel so much joy and excitement by yourself because you possess all of these that you try to kiss yourself. Do you think that others will consider your behavior normal? (Laughter.) You have to appreciate how precious your partner is. God possesses everything, but even He needs a partner, an object of love.
When you place your fingers very close to your eyes you cannot focus on them, because once two things become too close, then you can no longer distinguish between them. When you were a child did you ever try to pick the wax out of your ears or the mucus from your nose and taste it? What did it taste like? (Salty.) Everyone agrees that it tasted salty, so it means you tried to do it. Suppose someone else offered you their ear wax to taste, would you taste it? (NO.) Why don’t you feel that your own is dirty? Because it is part of yourself.
Have you ever tried counting how many times you blink in one day? (No.) If you try to count for one hour, you would become exhausted. Why is it that we are unaware of this constant blinking? Because we are totally united with the action; it is part of us.
When you go to the bathroom and make a smell you do not seem to mind. However, if someone else comes and makes the same smell, you want to run out of the bathroom. (Laughter.) Why don’t you feel that your own smell is bad? Because it is one with you. Once you become totally united, you feel no difference.
Raise your right hand and place it on the left side of your chest. What do you feel? (Heartbeat.) How many times are you aware of your heart beating during the day? Once you are involved with the activities of the day, you become oblivious to your heartbeat. However, if you listen to your heart through a stethoscope, it makes a loud thumping noise. If someone touches even one strand of your hair, you feel it, but when it comes to your heartbeat, which is a hundred times stronger than that touch, you do not feel it because you are totally one with it.
Historically, I am the first one to describe this kind of internal oneness in relation to the function of our different organs.
God is within us
It is crystal clear that we possess love, life and conscience and yet we do not feel them because they are totally one with us. By the same token, God is within the depth of our conscience; yet we do not feel Him because of the oneness. This is a revolutionary vision. People have been seeking God throughout history, but failed to realize that God was within them.
Why is it that we cannot feel something when it becomes totally one with us? Once you feel 100 percent love, you and your partner will feel the stimulation of life and consciousness and be motivated into action. When you watch a young girl and boy find oneness through love, they even start to look different.
Only true love can generate life, conscience and lineage. Since God is the root of true love, you can activate even God Himself through true love. If you hit one tine of a tuning fork, the other will vibrate even without your touching it. By the same principle, if an unfallen person is touched with God’s true love, the whole mind and body will resonate with the impact. When your love partner touches your body, the unseen love and unseen God within you is activated.
If Adam and Eve had married as subject and object of true love, God who dwelled within them would have been activated. However, due to the fall, they were unable to experience God’s true love when they married. There was no resonance. The intended relationship was cut off. Their marriage should have logically been God’s marriage. Unless the starting points of divine and human love are the same, there will always be two different directions of love and two different destinations of love. There would be no concept of unification, peace, happiness, freedom or faith.
Freedom and happiness are based on love
Freedom should occur in conjunction with total unity. For example, after you fight with your spouse, do you feel free all day long? Without a foundation of true love, you cannot contemplate freedom and happiness. While our mind and body are fighting, how can we even talk about freedom and happiness? When mind and body are fighting within husband and wife, it is like four different people are dwelling in their marriage. Do you follow? (Yes.) Only upon the foundation of true love can we even think about peace and happiness.
Throughout history there have been many kinds of wars, but eventually all of them have come to an end. However, the war between mind and body has never ceased. This is the most dangerous and fearful battle. How can we talk about peace on this battlefield? Because of this ceaseless fight, God has been chased out. He has been unable to dwell with His children.
When we chase God out who comes in? Satan. After the fall, Satan took the position of false husband and enemy of love. It was as though the archangel came like a thief, stole God’s intended bride and made her his own wife. Imagine Satan taking away the bride of God, marrying her and producing children. Could they simply come back to God with their children and ask to be accepted? Our common sense tells us that if we were God in such a situation, we would feel like striking them; but God tells us to love even that kind of enemy.
For God to truly love such an adversary, His heart would have to die. Why does God love even that kind of enemy? God has to restore them and have them live as a restored family in order to bring them to the Kingdom of God as part of His direct lineage. Unfallen people were supposed to live in accordance
with God’s love and principle and establish a sinless family, entering the Kingdom of God as a family. Fallen people, however, became enemies of God. To restore them back to the original position as His children, God has to offer more love to them than to His own children. God began the restoration 4,000 years ago, starting from Jacob’s family.
God has to regain the top position
God’s children were supposed to follow Heavenly Father and enter into His kingdom. However, due to the fall, Satan rose to the top position and God had to take the bottom position. That is why there was confrontation on the individual level, family level, tribal level and worldwide level. Only after this relationship is totally restored can people begin their true lives as God’s children. When God reaches the original top position, Satan has to go to the bottom and disappear.
In these Last Days we see confusion and turmoil of all kinds in the world. Faithful Christians who started out on the right track of restoration may, because of a wrong turn, go with Satan and fall back again. On the other hand, atheists who began at the wrong place may, if they are fortunate and follow God, receive God’s blessing in the Last Days. In the Last Days a religion should emerge with a logical explanation with which everyone can understand and agree. Otherwise, people are left without an opportunity to truly understand.
The Middle Ages was a God-centered period, but humanistic thought gradually became dominant. On an individual level, because we have an invisible mind and God-given root we are still able to connect to God. In medieval times people centered upon God by faith, but as history progressed the church abused its power and evil things began to take place. This caused some people to conclude that God did not exist.
After the French Revolution, humanistic thought became rampant, leading to a materialistic ideology. Strictly speaking, humanists cannot solve questions about life’s beginning and end. Humanism is a temporary kind of ideology, so it cannot last indefinitely. Communism viewed the entire world from a materialistic perspective. It claimed that the origin of this universe had to be material. However, matter cannot be the subject and origin and, as a consequence, communism has met its demise.
After the demise of communism in Soviet Russia, I proclaimed Godism and headwing ideology which is the true love ideology and teaches the total unity between God and humanity. People are in the position to be totally united with God and totally united with the entire universe. Therefore, people are in the position of mediators between God and the universe. True love is the mediator which causes everything to come into oneness. Everything can be embraced and melted with true love.
As soon as God reaches the top position, human history will continue in a normal pattern through the different levels of love-including individual, family, tribe, nation and world. We have to set things right side up.
Religions proclaim that we should deny ourselves absolutely. Did you possess your name even before God’s creation? Was America born before the fall? America still belongs to Satan. God has never established a true love relationship with humankind. Now that a God-centered ideology, united around True Parents, has appeared, God can be united with people through true love. People can stand as mediators, with our minds connected to God and the spiritual world, and our bodies connected to the physical world.
The ideal family
The most difficult question I had to answer was “where do divine and human loves meet?” After many years of prayer God told me that true love meets at the most direct connection between vertical and horizontal. When a horizontal line and vertical line meet, the most direct connection is a ninety-degree angle, not 89 or 91 degrees. True love enables people to make the most direct connection, which is a ninety-degree angle. That concept can be expanded from the individual level to the family, tribe, nation and so forth. If we divide a sphere into upper and lower sections, front and back, and left and right, we can make twelve identical sections. There is no loss, no contradiction, no confrontation in such an arrangement; everything fits perfectly, because they are all ‘ identical when they are totally united. That is what we refer to as “the ideal family.”
The family is the basic unit for bringing the universal unity and harmony. It is the starting point of universal love and harmony. Within a family, we can find children’s love, brotherly and sisterly love, conjugal love and parental love. The world is made up of these four relationships. Whether you visit a village or a city, you can observe these relationships. The family is the ideal unit for bringing all the levels of a community into oneness. Therefore, if you can train your family members to be citizens of the Kingdom of God, this world can become the Kingdom of God. Family relationships can be multiplied and extended universally. If your family lives this way and if your country lives this way, you can travel anywhere and find expansions of this pattern. The family unit is the key to all social relationships.
Cain/ Abel relationships have to be restored within a family. Abel should embrace the Cain-type, satanic world and create unity. To embrace the satanic Cain-type world, you have to invest yourself, as I explained earlier. The family is the key unit of restoration, but restoration needs to expand through all eight stages.
I indemnified 4,000 years of history of restoration in forty years by going through these eight stages and establishing a foundation in 160 nations. If you can restore at least 160 families, you can symbolically indemnify 160 nations. The scale of your work is small; but because of my victorious foundation of 160 nations, you can be lifted up to that level. Whatever parents own can be bequeathed to their children. Therefore, you should feel closer to me than to your own physical parents, because they still belong to Satan.
The love palace
Now you know who God is and where God dwells. God is one with you, just as love, life and lineage are one with you. The marriage of Adam and Eve was meant to be God’s marriage. If the marriage of Adam and Eve had been the marriage of God, their sexual organs would have become the original palace of love. While other families would have palaces of love, Adam and Eve would have had the only original, vertical palace of love. How precious this palace is! Furthermore, their sexual organs would have been the original palace of life, the original palace of blood lineage, and the original palace of the con-science. Due to the fall our conscience is not crystal clear; it has not reached completion.
The sexual organ is so precious that you would not dare to trade it for the entire universe. It belongs to God. Happiness, freedom, hope and all good ideals have their beginnings with the sexual organ. This is the original starting place of the Kingdom of God on earth and in heaven. It is a wonderful place and, at the same time, a dangerous place.
Originally in the Garden of Eden there were five male figures (God, the three archangels and Adam) and only one female figure. God knew the preciousness of the human sexual organ, so He was particularly worried about Eve. That is why God gave them the warning to be careful. God referred to Eve as the tree of knowledge of good and evil. She could have produced the prince of goodness. However, she took a wrong turn and produced a Mafia-like human race.
No one can deny that people fell through the misuse of love. Once people recognize that this world is evil and that True Parents have appeared, they have to follow True Parents to restore this evil world. The power of true love is stronger than satanic love, so there will be no problem once everything is restored. God is stronger than Satan. However, we need to reflect upon the preciousness and danger of this love palace. If we misuse it, everything will become broken and your life will be destroyed. Homosexuality, free sex and alcoholism are tools to destroy God’s original love palace. God sent me to restore everything.
Morning and night, do not misuse your love organ, because God is its owner. God dwells there. Your wife’s organ belongs to God. It is part of your body, but it is not just your body. God found the safest place in your body and put it there. (Laughter.) He was hiding and protecting it, in a way. That is true. This is a miracle-making organ. Since you know that, you cannot even dare to think about free sex. Have you thought about following a beautiful woman or girl at times? You have one spouse for eternity, just like Adam and Eve. Without practicing this, you cannot remain in the Kingdom of God. Do you understand? (Yes.)
Your home is an embassy of heaven
You need to have True Parents’ picture in your family home, together with the Unification Church flag, because your family’s home represents the embassy of the heavenly nation. When you visit foreign countries and see the American flag displayed on a building, you know it is an American embassy. If you have any difficulty, you would go there. By the same token, when the good spirit people come down to this world and see the Unification Church flag, they will naturally come to your house.
By mobilizing good spirits to your home in that way, all the bad spirits who might be hanging around will be chased out. Your home will then be occupied by good, beneficial spirits.
When you bow to True Parents’ picture and display the Unification Church flag, Satan will have to go far away from your home. Satan and evil spirits do not like the sound of the flag fluttering in the wind. It drives them away. Do you have your flags hoisted on the outside of your homes?
Wherever I travel around the world, many good spirits accompany me. Many good spirits are coming down in these Last Days. When Jacob wrestled with the angel, the angel was forced to leave at daybreak. Now, when the good spirits come down where Unification Church flags are displayed, they can remain with us. In this way we can mobilize more good spirits and chase evil forces from this world step by step.
Don’t you want to obtain the highest position in the world? Historically, it has been said that people cannot satisfy their desires and hopes; but ideally all people are supposed to fulfill their longings and reach their desires. Without the fall, we could have enjoyed that reality. Where is that goal? Once your con-science occupies God totally, you will reach your goal, no matter what your goal may be. If you want to truly practice the Principle I have taught you, serve people with respect and sacrifice yourself. Will you seek a comfortable place or a place where you will shed your tears, sweat and blood?
Digest all circumstances
I have always taught you to have the heart of parents, in the shoes of a servant, shedding sweat for earth, tears for humanity and blood for heaven. You will not reach the goal without practicing that formula. This is the conclusion of my teaching.
If you go into the mountains, you will see dead trees and various kinds of waste that accumulate in the valleys, inviting many insects. Such places attract many animals and become famous sightseeing areas. If you want to become a truly famous person, you have to be able to stand up like a high mountain and embrace these low valleys also.
When you plant seeds, you have to provide fertilizer and topsoil to create the environment for the seeds to grow. Fertilizer does not have a good smell, but the seed needs to digest it to grow. What part of our body is the most precious? Our love organ is also the place through which waste is excreted. Bad smells come from that place. God created both functions together to educate people to go through different circumstances and digest them. We should think about this every time that we use them. If everyone determines daily to embrace, digest and clean up whatever is dirty and smelly in this country, then the Kingdom of God will soon be a reality. If you continuously practice this principle, then you will become the president of your country.
In this sense, have I been living a good or bad life? I have been persecuted and imprisoned many times; how can you call that a good quality of life? All the persecution and mistreatment I have received are like insects and birds creating the environment that can attract tourists to the most famous mountain.
During my struggles and suffering while I was searching for the truth for humankind, I suddenly had an awakening. I had been sitting on top of the right answer all these years and, in a way, I was very disappointed.
Control bodily desires
You are false selves searching for your true selves through practicing what I have been teaching. Remember that your conscience still belongs to God. In the relationship between your body and mind, which one is in control? Does your mind drag your body around or vice versa? When your body follows your mind completely, then this world will become a good world, but it is obviously the other way around.
If you are hungry and there is some nice food available, your conscience tells you to give it to someone who is hungrier than you. However, your body wants to take it and eat it. Which of these directions do you follow? In reality, our body has been dragging and controlling our mind all of these years. Many times our body has made our mind cry and suffer. People do not even realize this, but we know this to be true.
The power of love is stronger than the power of conscience; even satanic love is stronger than the power of conscience. If the power of conscience had been stronger than the power of love at the fall, the conscience would have triumphed.
The power of love is so strong that teenagers who are in love have sometimes committed suicide together when their parents would not let them marry. We have to be aware of this extreme power of love. If we truly understand the historical consequences of the fall, we can control our bodily desires. No matter how strong the desire of our body, our conscience can suppress it. Even God cannot eliminate this kind of bodily desire. However, if we truly understand this, we can utilize our conscience fully and crush this desire.
At the bottom of the millions of scandalous problems all over the world is usually a man/woman problem. If we eliminate this man/woman problem, most of the other problems in this world can be solved, then world peace is before us.
If we truly understand this, the individual door to the Kingdom of God can be opened. Our fleshly desires are the problem. God allowed so many religions throughout human history not bemuse they could bring people to the Kingdom of Heaven, but so people could control their bodily desires through the influence of religion.
We have to proclaim to the world the liberation of the conscience. The conscience has been misunderstood. Religions usually provide methods of controlling bodily desires such as fasting, serving others, self-sacrifice and denying the original desire of the body. Some religions even teach that we should leave our families behind to follow the spiritual path. The celibate life is emphasized in many religions because of problems in the man/woman relationship. The purpose behind all of this is to destroy your bodily desire. As long as you control your bodily desire, your mind will naturally go in the right direction. If your mind rises to where God’s love can be tapped directly, your life will become enriched.
You can occupy God through love
We marry because an individual man or woman is only half of a whole human being. If you truly want to perfect love, you need both the convex and concave aspects. When your mind and body become totally one in love, God’s love can be grafted onto that place. You can be united with God in that very place, at that very moment. In order for a man to be perfected, he has to go through the love of woman. In order for a woman to be perfected, she needs to go through the love of a man. It is the only route.
Once you become horizontally united in love between husband and wife, which represents east and west, you can be vertically connected with God’s true love, representing north and south. Upper and lower axis, combined with the front and rear axis, create a sphere. Centering upon this love, man can occupy woman and woman can occupy man. Only when that takes place can God can come down and occupy people and people occupy God.
Woman occupies the western sphere and man occupies the eastern sphere. Once they become one, their goal is to occupy God, centering upon true love. Until this time, there had been no axis of true love in this world. Because of the fallen world’s situation, the axis of love has always been shaky, never permanently established. Through married love, man occupies woman and woman occupies man. When they become totally one, happiness begins. When you offer yourself totally, you can expect a return. Once husband and wife become totally one in loving marriage, they can offer their love to God with happiness and joy.
If you set that condition, you can declare that your conscience is totally united with God’s love. Compare the scope of your conscience with the scope of true love. True love is bigger, because it is connected to God. Even our conscience has true love as its root. Our conscience still wants to rest in the bosom of God’s love.
How can we use our conscience to occupy God’s love? Until now no one succeeded in doing this, so the Kingdom of God in heaven has been vacant. True Parents have opened the door of the Kingdom of Heaven.
This is not a casual talk I am giving you. This is the conclusion of my life experience, after winning all the victories. Do you understand? Do you realize now just how much you need True Parents? Do you consider True Parents more precious than the entire nation of America? How about the entire world? If you truly, deeply feel that, we will be able to liberate God. Even though the Kingdom of God in heaven is still vacant, if we truly live up to His standard we can fill it up in one thrust with the entirety of humankind.
We need to continuously destroy our bodily desires every moment of our lives. Since I have taught you in clear detail, you will not be able to blame me if you fall into hell in the future. I have taught you the truth; if you fail to follow the truth and live by it, the truth itself will judge you. There are no longer any restrictions. This is why I am revealing all of these truths to you. As long as you are able to crush bodily desires, you are on the right track.
Your conscience leads you to heaven
You also understand that no matter what a religion may teach, none of them can take you to the Kingdom of God. Only by reaching God’s true love through our conscience will we arrive at heaven.
The world is filled with mixed-up, distorted love relationships. By climbing the ladder of our conscience, we can restore love. The world is so mixed up that once you begin climbing the ladder you must not let go. Use your conscience to take you higher, one step at a time. If you constantly strive forward, you will be able to liberate your conscience.
God is our True Parents, True Teacher and True King, and He has given all these roles to us. Your conscience enables you to connect to your vertical Parents, who is God. Therefore, your conscience can never leave you. Your physical parents may be able to leave you because they are related to you horizontally, not vertically. Your conscience is more precious than your own physical parents, because it protects you forever. Your conscience can lead you to the Kingdom of God.
Teachers in the horizontal world do not stay with you after a certain time, but your conscience never leaves you 24 hours a day for eternity. Therefore, it is more precious than your teacher. Your conscience is the representative of God.
Through your conscience you can desire an even higher position than God. As God’s partner, you can desire to become more than God.
If you take some action, your conscience perceives it even before God does. Our conscience dwells within us and leads us to the correct direction, in the place of God. Man and woman are supposed to be the ideal objects of God’s love. Once man and woman become totally one, then mind and body become totally one, and God immediately perceives that.
Whatever your conscience perceives is automatically recorded in the spiritual world’s computer. Your conscience remembers whatever you have done throughout your entire life. Once we truly understand that such a world exists, we cannot commit any sin.
Our parents give us birth, then we go to school and learn under our teacher’s supervision, and finally we have to serve our king. These are external roles. God is our original Parents, original Teacher and original King, all combined into one. These internal roles-Parents, Teacher and King-become united in God. As long as you continue to follow your conscience, you will become an absolute object of God. You will then be able to occupy and connect with God’s true love.
The Korean word for conscience is yang shim. Your conscience came into being even before your parents, because your con-science was given by God. It is your pipeline to God. Your body is always pulling you off the ladder; however, your conscience always offers you a ladder to God. Once you truly understand this meaning and live up to this standard, you do not need religion and you do not need God. That is the spirit of our Family Pledge.
Once you clearly understand what I have taught you here tonight, you will be able to control your bodily desires, right? Since I have taught you everything so clearly, no more teaching is necessary.
