Father’s Speech given on March 15, 1992 at Belvedere
My topic this morning is Chun Ji In Hop Tauk. Hop tauk means joining for completion, for glory, for success, for everything positive and good. In the formation of the character you can see that man, not heaven or earth, is at the center of the joining. Thus, the universe should be one, centering on man.
The Chinese character for heaven is made up of two people. Two people completely united means heaven. The character for earth has a junction between vertical and horizontal lines, signifying mind and body. The character for join is made up of a man and a mouth, signifying that when all mouths become one, there is complete unity.
THE WALLS ARE COMING DOWN
When the Unification Church started, nobody knew what was happening. From the individual position all the way to the world position, the Unification Church was denied. One person named Reverend Moon emerged; I began as one small person, and I have developed to the worldwide level not by being welcomed but by being opposed. I have become a victor, first on the individual level, then on the family level, and on to the levels of clan, race, nation, world, spiritual world, universe, and even to the level of God. Are there many people who do not know about the existence of Reverend Moon? Perhaps no one in his own generation has had his name known as widely as mine. I have assembled leaders, presidents, and premiers in conferences.
Everywhere people have built walls, trying to stop me from entering their realm. But I have successfully gone over every wall and brought it down. Has America been able to draw a line and say, “That may be your domain, but this is ours and you cannot enter”? The recent negative report on the Public Broadcasting System was an effort to belittle and block my achievements. However, the reverse took place: through the negative report on PBS, people understood that Reverend Moon is right! The people who wanted to push me back got pushed back themselves.
Russia, with its well-fortified wall of communism, also tried to push me away, but it was they who crumbled. Even Kim Il Sung, who practices the most formidable type of atheistic communism, has opened up. Some Americans do not know who the president of the United States is, but there is no one who does not know who Reverend Moon is or who has not heard his name. The president of the United States changes every four years, but Reverend Moon never changes. Every level that has tried to push me back is being influenced by my Thought into one unified direction.
Until recently, the Japanese kept me from entering their country; now Japan is changing. The ministries of internal affairs and foreign affairs met and decided they would be called a barbarian nation for being the only country in the world to keep out Reverend Moon. China, Russia, and even North Korea have opened up, so Japan has no reason not to do the same. As of March 26, the ban against my traveling to Japan has been lifted.
THE BRIDES’ ROLE
On April 10, 1992, there will be a women’s conference and rally in Korea. Centering on Mother and representing all womanhood, both Korean and Japanese women will gather, along with worldwide representatives, in a historic women’s conference. The Bible talks about 144,000 people being lifted up at the time of the second advent, centering on the bridegroom. Will the 144,000 be represented only by Christians? Christianity is a bride religion, having spread throughout the world, waiting to receive the bridegroom. Will the 144,000 be men or women? Brides or grooms? [Brides.]
April 10 is also significant in that it represents Mother’s thirty-third wedding anniversary. This period resolves the regret of Jesus, who was crucified at the age of thirty-three. This women’s rally will indemnify Jesus’ regret and rectify what he could not do. The brides will gather together and proclaim that from now on we are entering the realm of heaven.
In Korea, one strong spiritual faction says that the Lord will come in October of this year. Well, he has already done everything! Everything is done, and still they are waiting for somebody to descend from heaven. The party is already finished! None of these things have happened by accident. They have been predicted and are coming to pass. Therefore, this is an amazing moment in the history of the dispensation. Because of this foundation, we can say that the joining, or hop tauk, is taking place.
THE VALUE OF ONE CHILD
Another important concept is chekim bun dam, which means our portion of responsibility. Chekim bun dam signifies the joining of the direct and indirect dominions. Men representing heaven and women representing earth each fulfill their share of responsibility and come together in the act of love. The man has the action of planting, and the woman is in the position of the earth, receiving the seed, conceiving children, who will grow and represent the whole world.
A child is an individual, but as children grow older they form a family and will expand into a clan, then a nation, and ultimately the world. As God’s children, Adam and Eve were individuals but, at the same time, they were the world. Who gave birth to Adam and Eve? God. So the birth of Adam and Eve is the birth of the world, isn’t it? You have children for the purpose of making the universe, don’t you?
Any woman who has given birth to a child is at once both humbled and proud at the thought: “I have just given birth to a cosmic world.” Was it easy to give birth to a world? Think about the first president of the United States, George Washington, and what he did for the world, and you can glimpse the magnitude of what a man and a woman can create.
When you are having a holy night, do you men think, “I am about to plant a world not just a child or individual”? In this respect, what is the greatest aspect of human beings? What organ does the greatest task? Of course, the answer is the reproductive organ.
Can a man who has never fathered a child or a woman who has never given birth have anything to be proud of? How could they be more proud of anything else? Women give birth to the universe. There is no greater service anyone can perform.
As the child is growing inside her womb, the woman is conscious of a universe growing within her. Would you be willing to trade your child for the world? Even if someone offered you the universe, you would not let your child go. Ordinary women would not make such a trade, let alone a woman with original love. Would you trade your husband or wife for the universe? Why not? True love is the source of everything, the focus of everyone’s thoughts and desires.
In the Bible it is written that a child is precious, but we never knew why. If a child is traded for something else-even the universe-true love loses its importance.
THE VALUE OF ONE MAN OR ONE WOMAN
There are American women who boast, I don’t need a man. I am quite self-sufficient and happy.” Suppose there were no men on earth, would she say the same thing? If there was only one man, imagine the fierce competition for that one man. Any healthy, living woman would join in such a war. You know in principle how important it is for man and woman to unite. Would you join in even a bloody competition, to the death, for a spouse? I know you would at least try. If you didn’t join the competition you wouldn’t be worthy to be called a woman. What would be the value of being the top queen in a world where there are no men? In one sense it might be heaven, but in the other sense, it would be hell. Imagine how precious the presence of that one man would be the man you fought for in fierce competition and won.
If someone asked what would be heaven for women, you would immediately answer “man.” The same holds true for men; men cannot imagine a world without women.
Father is great in many ways, but what would he be without Mother? Because Mother is right here I can laugh: my eyes can laugh, my nose can laugh, my mouth can join in laughing. If she was not here, there would be no laughter. Wherever she is, that is my heaven. Without her, all is hell.
The fact that one woman meets one man, or one man meets one woman, is not just a small happening. It is a universal happening. The concept of free sex is so destructive and dark. You must fight every inch of the way and become a victor.
All men, since the time of their conception, have absorbed the core elements of the masculine part of the universe. Likewise, women have absorbed the feminine elements of the universe. When such a perfected man and perfected woman join together, God pulls the string, and all the elements of the universe are connected to them. They didn’t just happen to meet. The man had to survive and be victorious in order to reach this level, and the woman, too. Their joining is in yeon: the result of cause and effect on a universal scale.
In English we say True Parents, but in Korean there is no single term for parents. Rather, we say father and mother: pu mo. Father is always said first, then mother. Women also use the words in the same order: father and mother. To say father first is appropriate, because women are smaller and less strong than men. No record shows women winning over men in the Olympic championships.
So when do men and women come into unity and become equal? Should you wait for a few million more years? [No.] Centering on true love, men and women are absolutely equal. Without true love, men are always in a superior position.
If you were to draw true love with a face, you would give it one masculine eye and one feminine eye. Half of a woman wants to be conquered by a man, and half of a man wants to be conquered by a woman. Therefore, only true love can occupy both the world of a man and the world of a woman. What I am pointing out is that half of you is no longer yours; it belongs to your spouse. Is a man complete? Is a woman complete? Together they are everything.
Suppose all the world’s most beautiful women are gathered here, and the one, most handsome man on earth walks by them. Would they turn their eyes to see him? Each woman would focus on him with all her nerve endings. Every eye would be looking at him. It is true love existing in women that makes them do that.
The definition of a handsome man is elusive. You could say that a handsome man is the one with the most well proportioned features, or the best developed muscles. But a truly handsome man is one who exemplifies all love. The more perfect the love, the more perfect the man the more handsome the man. Handsomeness has to do not with the face but with the heart.
THE VALUE OF INTERNAL ATTRIBUTES
Do not judge by the externals whether a man is handsome or a woman beautiful. Start by looking at the heart. Where did the most goodlooking man come from? Who is the origin of handsomeness and beauty? God. Our Heavenly Father is the number one owner and teacher of beauty. The root of beauty is God. The man who has true comeliness will be pursued by all women.
Suppose God Himself appears as the best-looking parents. Of course, God cannot exist physically, because then everybody would try to connect with Him. If God had form, everybody would recognize His perfection; everyone would know where He is and try to go to Him, and there would be impossible chaos. God is so wise that He made Himself invisible, giving half of His attributes to men and half to women. So when true love is stirred up, something in man and woman churns, and they head for each other. When they meet together, they burst into happiness. When you are in the apex of love, you wouldn’t mind if you died, would you?
What I am trying to teach you is this: the things we cannot see are the most important things. Have you ever seen love? Have you ever seen life? Have you ever seen mind? These most precious and important aspects of human life cannot be seen. Love, life and mind are invisible, but they are the most important. It doesn’t matter if a woman is beautiful; if she has life, love and mind, God will surely reside with her. Likewise, if you want to become someone God loves most, someone who attracts a partner, you should develop these invisible qualities. Since they are invisible, others may not notice that you have them; but as you diligently accumulate more of these attributes throughout your life, God will visit you more often.
THE PURPOSE OF LOVE AND LIFE
You need a generous or big mind, stretching out to overcome the universe, comprehending all four corners of the universe. Your love wants to embrace the universe. Life wants to reach out to all four corners of the universe. Life wants to expand, and love wants to embrace. Love wants to embrace and squeeze so tightly that there is no space left at the core, so tight that your front side becomes your back side. Sometimes you cannot control the urge to squeeze your baby, to squeeze your husband. Those who have life must develop. Those who have love must unify. Thus the purpose of love is to unify, and the purpose of life is to expand.
Men and women are quite different, aren’t they? Women look at the earth and men look toward heaven. Women wonder why men look up, but if they do not look up they lose the center. If your husband loses the center, you will too. Women can enjoy their freedom only when revolving around their husband. Without a husband a woman cannot be secure; nobody will believe her. You need not only horizontal relations but vertical relations as well.
In the value perspective, are American men satisfied with American women? Are American women satisfied with American men? Men should be masculine and women feminine, not the other way around. Do you like to see men act like women and women act like men? You women would rather die than live with a man who wore makeup and had manicures like a woman!
THE VALUE OF KEEPING SILENT
Do you like talkative people or silent people? In the Orient there are many statues of Buddha. He never speaks a word; he neither praises nor chastises. You never know what he is thinking. Yet everybody comes to worship him. He is always looking at one focal point, never glancing around like we do. We do not know what he is looking for, but he looks for something.
In a complicated situation, the best solution is silence. When something happens, women jump around but men sit even more still. Sometimes I sit with my eyes closed and do not say anything. Because I never know whether something sad or happy will result, I am in anticipation. I try not to miss the sign of what is to come.
When ten women gather together, imagine how much talking takes place. But if one of the ten does not say a word, she will eventually become the center of those women, because the other nine will pay attention to her. If she does not speak for ten years, everyone will wonder what she is thinking, what her opinion is.
When Western and Oriental diplomats meet, the Westerners tend to talk more. In diplomacy, who is eventually the winner: the one who speaks little or the one who speaks much? The one who stays silent is more likely to become a judge. Similarly, in court, the judge says little, but he has the final word. We have to understand the power of silence.
For so many years God has hardly spoken. There has been much commotion between the existing churches and me. Most of the noise has come from the churches who criticize us. They have been saying all kinds of things about me. However, I almost never speak against others, except when it is absolutely necessary. Which course do you think is the wiser?
In families, women tend to speak more than men. In business, those who keep silent and work diligently will be thought of as the owner. In society, if someone keeps silent for ten years, his words will become more trustworthy when he does speak. Once he speaks everybody listens and trusts him. The one who speaks a lot may gain a lot externally, but inside he loses everything.
If you are going to speak for the sake of the whole world, if you know you are right, and if you know that your speech will help others, then it is helpful to talk more.
When you do speak, people ask if you practice what you say. By this criterion, can anybody afford to say much? The one who boasts gradually expands and creates an imaginary realm, and eventually his talk becomes false. In general, the one who is more silent is better connected to the side of truth. To the degree that people speak more than necessary, they become connected to what is false.
Westerners advertise themselves and consider it a virtue. Orientals, on the other hand, hide themselves, knowing that other people will discover them. In the past twenty or thirty years, Japanese have toured through the world, seldom speaking, but taking a lot of pictures. People wonder how Japan has risen so high. Nobody realized what the Japanese were doing while they were taking all those pictures. The West is the inventor and Japan the copier, but now the copiers have become the masters and legitimate owners. Americans jump up and down and say they do not like Japan, but what can they do? One was proud and boasting, and the other humble and silent, but their positions have changed so greatly. This is another testimony to the virtue of silence.
IN THE FAMILY HEAVEN, EARTH AND MANKIND ARE JOINED
Now you realize both by reason and by heart that what is most important for women is not money or prestige or even beauty. Likewise, what a man needs most is not things like fame. Women want men, and men want women. A woman’s value is determined not by herself but through her spouse. A man’s value is determined not by himself but through his spouse. Through love, value is exchanged.
What is the human purpose? There are two answers to this question: for a woman it is a man, and for a man it is a woman. We are born not for ourselves but for each other, centering on true love.
We need to understand love more deeply. Before T even came to exist, love existed. Love is the originator of my life. The original concept of love was invisible. Love has a plus side, which became man, and a minus side, which became woman. In other words, the positive and negative aspects of invisible love were deployed separately, with the positive portion constituting the vertical existence and the negative portion the horizontal existence. Both plus and minus grow through different stages in preparation to meet and intersect. The man is the fruit of all the great invisible plus elements and the woman the fruit of all the great invisible minus elements. Man and woman pursue various courses of study and individual preparation, but their destiny is to meet each other. When they meet, all plus and minus join, and children are the result.
Our mind is the fruit of all the vertical invisible elements and our body the fruit of all the horizontal visible elements. Thus when man and woman come together, this is one grand joining of heaven and earth. This unified body will fit anywhere; it is the ideal point of settlement; it is the supreme destination of parental love, children’s love, and conjugal love. A single individual will never reach perfection. Heaven, earth and mankind are clearly separate, but when man and woman meet in true love, all elements are joined together.
This concept is known in the Divine Principle as our area of five percent responsibility. Our portion of responsibility is to reach this point of one grand joining of heaven, earth and mankind. What matters most is not money, position or influence. What matters most is true love, true parental love, true children’s love and true conjugal love.
God also has dual characteristics, like the two halves of the seed contained in one hull. Can you take the plus part of one seed and combine it with the plus part of another seed to create a new existence? No. If one side is eliminated, the whole will be destroyed. This is a law under which God’s world operates.
Husband and wife are like the fruit of God. Free sex alters the God-given combination. When you plant a distorted being, will it bring forth any significant being? No. In a similar way, free sex is the end of that generation. AIDS is one actual result. When people select their spouse, how can you tell whether he or she is infected with AIDS? Let those who have AIDS identify themselves, so other people can defend themselves. If America cannot take care of this problem by itself, someone like Reverend Moon has to solve the problem, not only for this country but for the world as well. Who caused this deviation from the holy position? Not God, but Satan.
Unless we reach this point of joining, there is no true happiness. Because of his wife, a husband can rejoice. The children, the neighborhood, even the whole country can laugh because of her presence. What men enjoy most is to look at a laughing woman. Women put makeup on the mouth and eyes, because the mouth is where laughter starts and the eyes are the signals of everything. If women had beards, we wouldn’t be able to see their mouths, which change so sensitively in laughter. If you want to paint your fingernails to magnify your expression of true love in cooking and caressing and doing wonderful, loving things with your hands, that is all right. But no other reason is acceptable.
ADD INVISIBLE VALUE
There are three very valuable things which we cannot see: life, love and mind. Love is the center of the three. If you have money, your mind suggests that you distribute it to all Americans. Then your mind asks why you stop with 240 million Americans and pushes you to distribute it to the five billion people of the world. Even that is not enough, for your mind will ask why you forget the spirit world and even God. To share only our visible possessions will not receive God’s approval. He will ask, “Don’t you have more to give?” When you start giving things which you cannot even see and nobody else can see, God will approve of you. God is the master of everything which is not visible, and He will approve of the person who gives both visible money and invisible mind.
When a wife gives a present to her husband, she gives not only a tangible gift but also her mind. To give only a material gift is not appreciated. Even though you know your husband loves you with his body, you want to know that he loves you with his mind as well.
We need to turn our attention more to the invisible side. we know how to deal with the visible side. Now we must advance to understand things which have global value. Like God, we have duality, with visible and invisible aspects.
Here you need to understand another Korean term ‘Chung sung.’ There is no good English equivalent for this key term. It means heart and mind and effort, all put together. You come to Belvedere to hear me speak, but you do not come thoughtlessly; you meditate on all the historical encounters and wait for me with chung sung. Just to be present is precious enough, but with the addition of the invisible chung sung, our encounter becomes much more valuable.
Who is going to be the owner or center of the Unification Church? Not the big, husky man, but perhaps the small woman who adds invisible value, day after day accumulating invisible value until she eventually becomes the center of the Unification Church. God will notice her. I will recognize her coming to me; she will not look like just another face in the crowd. Thoughts create invisible power. Everyone can accumulate this power. We are free to do this, day and night. If you pile it up like a mountain, God will certainly notice and praise you.
A wife waiting for her husband to return from work should not just hang around and then say “Hi.” You should think about your husband all day long, in many different ways. Then when you and your husband meet, your encounter will have added glory. A laughing face has attractive power to pull your husband. Such bonds develop not only between husband and wife, but between children and parents. A family that can do this will become a true blessing point.
When the man is working, he should think about his wife and children and want them to be serving the whole world. If you think deeply of your wife and children, they cannot leave you. They become bound with you by the force of your Jove. You have captured them. Everyone wants to be captured by that kind of love. How precious it is for you to exert this invisible power! You are strong and capable of doing this. Think about your children and cry for them, even when you cannot see them, and your heart will be transmitted to them.
GOD’S LOVE PARTNERS HAVE HIS QUALITIES
God recognizes such invisible properties and attributes, because that is what makes you resemble Him. The person who puts more emphasis on the invisible things is followed by God. The person who is recognized by God is the happiest person. All people will say to such a person, “I respect you forever, and I will follow you forever.” Such people will be God’s inseparable objects of love. God loves most those who live centered on this invisible world of love and life. You love me because I have invisible love power, invisible life power and invisible mind power. Anyone with those qualities becomes God’s partner of love.
God is the center of love, and God loves the person with these invisible attributes. Therefore, every human being automatically likes such a person too. A wise person accumulates invisible properties, and thus a wise person never perishes. Such a way of life produces unchangeable happiness, freedom and peace, along with invisible wealth. Such people shine on earth and in the spirit world. People’s level in the spirit world depends on how much of these invisible qualities they accumulate.
No one knows how many tears I have shed for earth and heaven. When I went to Danbury, everyone cried. However, I knew that my tears must soak through the prison wall and out the other side. And they did. The prison inmates became docile and gentle in front of me, like children corning to their parents. Without saying anything to them, my invisible love reached out to them. When they were ready to leave prison, they came with a gift for me. They would bring me the best thing they had possessed in prison life and leave it with me, saying, “Please keep it.” Wherever I go, my motto is, “Leave behind invisible accumulations.”
When I go to Korea, America suddenly feels empty. In spite of yourself, your direction leads you to face me. Our bodies are limited; we can only do so much. Our mind is limitless; there is hardly any limit to our hearts. Our purpose in life is to accumulate the most in the realm of heart while we are alive. If we work without limitations, we can accumulate more love and invest more love and thought. A person who lives like this throughout his lifetime enters the spirit world very naturally and easily.
This is the secret of my life: what is invisible is the most important. If you give the enemy even a dot of true love, that dot will be strong enough to protect him from Satan’s pulling him away from you. A true love dot cannot be occupied by Satan’s power.
Even though the world is so big, there is nothing we cannot know. The same with the invisible world. With true love, true life and true mind, you can embrace and unify everything. You cannot embrace all visible things, but you can embrace all invisible things. People with invisible power can embrace everything forever.
INVISIBLE POWER WORKS MIRACLES
Joining takes place mostly with invisible elements. To pray in an extremely complicated situation is very valuable and exerts formidable power. Those who pour a lot of chung sung into their lives are formidable and fearsome people. They can achieve miracles. Our visible achievements we must leave behind when we go to the spirit world. But we can take with us all the invisible treasures.
By culture and tradition, Americans have focused on the things they can see and achieve. From this point on, Americans will pay more attention to the invisible world. Such a transition toward true wealth will begin now, like springtime. American people need a different attitude toward the invisible world; otherwise there is no hope. America is headed toward destruction. How can we make resurrection? Only by pursuing the things of invisible value. When America starts doing that, the whole western world will follow. Then it will never perish.
Until now I have paved many roads, but I have especially paved the road for Mother. I have lifted her up and up and finally brought her to the same level I have achieved. I have given hundreds and thousands of hours of sermons. Mother doesn’t have to repeat the thousands of hours of sermons. If Mother gives an hour-long sermon three times, her position will be the same as mine. Finally, a “Mansei” can be shouted out in the world of womanhood.
In my goal for perfection, I always had Mother in mind, representing perfection from the outside world. My goal is to make the outside world perfect. The outside world is in the partner position for me. Mother is one with me. The outside world is nearing completion at this time, and Mother’s completion has come. After that she is standing on the same level as me. Do you understand? From there, a new world is appearing. A new turning point is coming. In that there is hope for all humankind.
Let us pledge today, “I will even ignore the visible world for the value of the invisible world. From now on I will change my attitude in life and start building up accumulations in the invisible world.” Those who pledge this, please raise your hands. God bless you!
