Germany: Dialogue-Breakfast- When Francis of Assisi met the Sultan
By Robert Bentele, UPF Germany
This was the topic of a dialogue breakfast hosted by Munich UPF on 30 November 2019.
We wanted to duly consider this historical Christian-Moslem encounter, between a mendicant and a powerful sultan which took place in Damietta, Egypt eight-hundred years ago.
According to a media report: In 1219 a historical encounter took place in Egypt: Francis of Assisi met the Sultan al-Malik al-Kamil. This meeting eight hundred years ago is considered up until this day as one of the most important interreligious meetings ever. It is of value to remember it and to draw from it conclusions for the present day.
We can ignore the part about eight-hundred years ago; it could also have been yesterday. And thus it was that sixteen representatives of different religious communities gathered to discuss this topic over a hearty breakfast.
One presenter dealt with the historical situation of that time and another with Francis and his life. In the third presentation, parts of a speech from Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, co-founder of UPF, were read out. According to her words, the goal of God’s Providence is ultimately to unite mankind into one family under one God.
We closed our fruitful meeting with a prayer for peace from Francis of Assisi.
