Lee Gi-Seong, Family Federation for World Peace and Unification-Korea President
‘Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon conducts the world providence with love for all humanity’
Declare this year, the hundred-year anniversary of the 3.1 Independence Movement, as the year to “Opening the Era to Firmly Establish the Heavenly Unified Korea”
President Lee Gi-Seong (65) rose to the position of Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (hereinafter referred to as “FFWPU”) Korea’s 17th President in December, 2017. President Lee, who joined the FFWPU in 1971, was appointed as FFWPU-Korea President after serving as the Chungnam District Director, Chairman of the Central Training Center, Director of the FFWPU-Korea Headquarters Witnessing Department, President of the Cheongpyeong Heaven and Earth Training Center and Chairman of the Educational Foundation Cheongshim.
At the inauguration ceremony for President Lee, held at the Cheongpyeong Heaven and Earth Training Center in Gapyeong County, Gyeonggi Province on December 26, 2017, he emphasized how he will “do his utmost to revive the FFWPU into the Family Federation for a Heavenly Korea, imbued with the Holy Spirit and truth, as well as for the witnessing, establishment of the environment conducive to the FFWPU and cultivation of future leaders.”
The Monthly JoongAng met up with President Lee, now on his second year since his inauguration, and interviewed him regarding the FFWPU’s objectives for this year, as well as the life and vision of Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, Head of Family Federation for World Peace and Unification.
A year has passed since your inauguration. What are your thoughts regarding this?
“I made efforts as the President of the Cheongpyeong Heaven and Earth Training Center for the spiritual growth of our worldwide Unification Family members until 2017. In that year, on December 15, Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon blessed the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification Korea Headquarters as the headquarters of the Heavenly Korea, and appointed me as president. Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon lays special emphasis on faith at its essence. She states how we must revive the community of the early days of the church that was filled with grace through the Holy Spirit and truth. She also christened the Seorak Village area of Gapyeong County as the ‘HJ Cheonwon [Heavenly Garden],’ and is going on to build an ideal community here. The FFWPU Headquarters also transferred here as expected and is supporting the 230-plus churches nationwide under Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon’s leadership. FFWPU’s revival, through a spiritual awakening movement, is healing Korea’s society, going beyond the level of our church, and, going a step further, has expanded as a world and national salvation movement to realize the ideal of ‘Humankind as One Family under God.’ I also accompany Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, who is leading the harmony, unification and peace movements not only in Korea, but at mission sites around the world, and I am experiencing ‘works like miracles’ first-hand.”
“The FFWPU, in essence, begins each new year with Rev. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon’s birthdays (on the sixth day of the first lunar-calendar month, same for both) and Foundation Day (on the thirteenth day on the first lunar-calendar month) as the year’s starting points. The FFWPU hosts various anniversary events around the anniversary dates of Rev. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon’s birthdays and Foundation Day.”
‘The Only Begotten Son and Only Begotten Daughter are the Beginning and Base as True Parents’
What sorts of activities did Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon carry out during the past year?
“Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon is already in her late 70s. Despite this, every day, once it becomes 7 am, she holds a meeting with FFWPU International Headquarters executives, receives reports of results and tasks pertaining to mission activities and peace movements carried out during the previous day around the world and afterwards proposes the direction the world and each mission country is to advance. Her public daily schedule that starts from the early morning continues unabated until late at night, 365 days of the year. She is conducting the world providence with love for humanity and profound devotion while living ‘one day like a thousand years,’ especially with the upcoming hundredth anniversary of Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s holy birth in the year 2020.
Notably, in last year, she conducted monumental rallies in various places around the world more than that of any year prior. In January, she was invited to Senegal as a VIP, and presided over the “World Summit Africa” there with President Macky Sall in attendance. In continuation to this, she presided over a rally in Europe last April with over 10,000 people in attendance, as well as two rallies in Korea in May and June, with 20,000 participants. She presided over each of the 20,000-person Hopeful March Forward Rallies held in Japan in July, in Brazil in August and again in Korea in October, and proclaimed the vision of the Heavenly Unified Korea. In November, she once again crossed the Pacific to the US, and presided over the Heavenly USA’s “Peace Starts with Me: Healing America,” and officiated a blessing ceremony in Zimbabwe, Africa, upon being invited as an honored guest. In addition, she was invited as an honored guest to South Africa and presided over the “2018 Africa Summit” in commemoration of the hundredth anniversary of President Mandela’s birth. In December, she once again traveled to Nepal, where the “Asia-Pacific Summit” was held, and presided over the assembly there.
The “Asia-Pacific Summit” held in Nepal was the largest international conference in Nepal’s history with seven current heads of state from the Asia-Pacific region in attendance. At this event, Mrs. Moon presided over and bestowed her blessing upon the schedule in its entirety. However, because Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon loves Korea, the fatherland of our faith more than any other country, she is always pouring her keen interest and deep devotion. Notably, as she gazes into the future of nations through spiritual perception, she conducts a special providence. In addition, in regard to North Korea, she is implementing a myriad of unseen efforts for the achievement of the vision of the Heavenly Unified Korea. She will also influence North Korea through Asian countries with diplomatic ties to North Korea, visit North Korea centering on core providential organizations of the Family Federation for a Heavenly Korea, including the Unification Korea Federation, and propose this vision for the future.”
What meaning does the Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon’s proclamation of her as the Only Begotten Daughter entail?
“Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, while spreading the word of True Parents’ manifestation to internal gatherings of religious groups and the general public of Korea through public speeches after July, 2014, what she proclaimed was the birth of the ‘Only Begotten Daughter.’ The Only Begotten Daughter, as an expression that alludes to Jesus (the Only Begotten Son), God’s only son, this designates Rev. Moon as the Only Begotten Son and Mrs. Moon as the Only Begotten Daughter in the FFWPU. If you look in the Bible, there is no reference whatsoever to the Only Begotten Daughter. Rev. Moon, who is the ‘source’ of the term, ‘Only Begotten Daughter,’ made many references to the Only Begotten Daughter. This is bound to be because we see the Only Begotten Daughter as an entity that definitely must exist from the viewpoint of the Unification Principle. As the Only Begotten Son and Only Begotten Daughter are substantial manifestations of the same dimension, our understanding is of them as having a reciprocal relationship in which if one exists, so must the other, and being essentially one while being two discrete entities.
Thus, the Only Begotten Son and Only Begotten Daughter are the starting point and base as the True Parents, and can only but be the core requisite in becoming True Parents. Also, because the Only Begotten Son and Only Begotten Daughter are directly correlated to not only the value and position, but also the achievements of True Parents, it can be said that an understanding of the Only Begotten Son and Only Begotten Daughter are required if one is to understand the two founders’ lives and their providential significance. In conclusion, the proclamation of the Only Begotten Daughter is the accentuation of Mrs. Moon’s identity and emergence of the femininity in line with the tide and fortune of the new era, that being of the advent of the era of women, as proclaimed by Rev. Moon while still alive.”
“Publicly Proclaimed as True Mother at the Women’s Federation for World Peace Inaugural Assembly in ‘92”
Please explain regarding Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon’s life.
“Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon was born as the only child and daughter of Mr. Han Seung-Woon (father) and Mrs. Hong Soon-Ae (mother) on February 10, 1943 (on the sixth day of the first lunar-calendar month) at her mother’s house in Sinui-ri 26, Anju-eup, Anju County in South Pyeongan Province. Chongchon River lies between Anju County and Jeongju County, which is Rev. Moon’s hometown, and Anju County is 70 ri (≈2.8km) away from the Chongchon River. The marriage of Mrs. Moon’s parents was an arranged marriage based on Pastor Lee Ho-Bin’s revelations before Korea’s liberation, and there were various spiritual evidence surrounding Mrs. Moon’s birth. Elderly woman Kim Seong-Do of the Holy Lord Church appeared before Mrs. Hong spiritually and requested her to raise this baby well. She is the Lord’s daughter. You are essentially her wet nurse. In regard to this, Mrs. Moon said that ‘a wet nurse cannot have personal feelings for the child, as she is a public person,’ and cherished her mother, saying, ‘Therefore, my mother was a figure who displayed self-less absolute faith for her entire life from the position of a wet nurse.’ In the year Mrs. Moon became six years of age, there was also a prophecy of Ho Ho-Bin of the ‘Inside-Belly’ Church that she ‘is the one who will become heaven’s bride.’
Rev. Moon has also made references to Mrs. Moon’s family line before. There must be a public foundation of three generations of only daughters to welcome the coming Lord for Mrs. Moon to be born, and this truly was the case in Mrs. Moon’s family line. The first time Mrs. Moon met Rev. Moon was when she was thirteen years old, or in early March of 1956, directly following her graduation from elementary school. She said that one day, her mother brought her to Rev. Moon and made her greet him. After Rev. Moon inquired of her name, she says that he gently closed his eyes and said, ‘I offer my gratitude before heaven for Han Hak Ja’s birth to Korea’ as if in a monologue. Mrs. Moon expressed this as a ‘profound and mysterious occurrence,’ while recollecting this previous experience. Mrs. Moon held her engagement ceremony with Rev. Moon on March 27, 1960, when they were 17 and 40 years old, respectively, and tied the knot as a couple through the Supper of the Lamb (i.e. marriage) on April 11. They reached the point of manifesting as the True Parents of humankind upon the family foundation of a sacrificial offering of three generations.”
How were Mrs. Moon’s activities following marriage?
“Mrs. Moon’s path following marriage was a treacherous one. As her life was one guided by a calling distant from the ordinary, she was in no position to discuss or anticipate the happiness of married life from the outset. Rev. and Mrs. Moon saw their bond as a couple as a means to complete their mission received by God and become true parents and reaffirmed and engraved in their minds that this was not for the happiness between one man and women as exemplified by the people of the world. Mrs. Moon, in her life course testimony she officially gave for the first time on May 3, 1977, the year of the seventeenth anniversary of her marriage, said how ‘If I even just think of the path I have trod, it was a series of difficult hardships’ and ‘Just as how God put trails before Rev. Moon and Satan tested Jesus, He tested me as well.’ While saying this, she also recalled that ‘Since I say that this weak woman like me passed such cruel and terrible trials that the messiah passed, you will find it difficult to believe.’ Despite this, there was not ever a single moment in which she did not advance for the liberation of God and salvation of humanity.
Mrs. Moon, who passed these hardships and adversity, was officially publicly proclaimed as the True Mother of humankind through the True Parents proclamation made at the Women’s Federation for World Peace Inaugural Assembly in April, 1992. Notably, Mrs. Moon stepped forth for the US 53-city tour, speaking tour of a hundred universities and US Capitol Hill’s invitational address from May of the following year. As the fruit of her efforts, the last Sunday of July was enacted and commemorated as ‘Parents’ Day’ on the national level in 1994, through votes from senators and congressmen, as well as President Clinton signing it into law. She reached the point of being publicly recognized as being the one who ‘completed the mission of a true child before heaven, a true wife before her husband and a true parent before her children’ in Rev. Moon’s award for her in June, 1999.”
“Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, emphasizes that ‘we must establish the new fortune in Korea”
What sorts of plans does FFWPU for the new year of 2019?
“The FFPWU opened the gates of the year of the Golden Pig through the ‘Nationwide Prayer to Open the Era of the Heavenly Unified Korea,’ held on the first day of first month by the Gregorian calendar in 2019. We prayed for the realization of God’s ideal on this earth, treading the path of Hyojeong, through the Holy Spirit and truth, the realization of peace on the Korean Peninsula, yearned by the Korean people, as well as the opening of the era of the Heavenly Unified Korea. The Family Federation for a Heavenly Korea will cling tightly onto God’s lofty call, and devote itself further toward the spiritual awakening movement, as well as world and national salvation movement. The True Families Implementation Movement, which we have been pushing forward since last year, will take root in the form of Hoondok Family Churches in 3,500 eub(town), myeon(township) and dong(neighborhood) administrative divisions nationwide. We will share the words of truth, care for our neighbors in need in our current living environment, and go on to expand the culture of practicing true love. The Head Wing Thought Unification Movement will unfold as FFWPU’s implementation movement to establish a world with the philosophy of mutual existence, mutual prosperity and mutual righteousness that places God, the Creator and True Parent of humankind, as the center, without leaning towards one party, whether it be liberals or conservatives. The FFWPU strives to realize peace on the Korean Peninsula, as well as the unification of South and North Korea, and we are planning for nationwide education to welcome the new age of a unified Korea. Its core themes comprise of true family values education and Head Wing Unification Thought education. Pertaining to the direction Korea is to go on, we will implement nationwide education encompassing everything from politics, economy, culture, ideology, ethics, women’s studies, youth studies, family and law, and will guide the Korean people to enable them to become those who will pioneer the Heavenly Unified Korea and, going a step further, become the leading figures of the Era of the Asia-Pacific Rim Cultural Sphere that will lead the world.”
We are curious about Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon’s vision and hopes for this year.
“Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon said that we must bring about the worldwide foundation established up until now to Korea, and establish a new fortune in Korea, especially with this year being that of the hundredth anniversary of the 3.1 Independence Movement. This indeed refers to the unification of Korea. This is why she bestowed to us the calligraphy, ‘Opening the Era to Firmly Establish the Heavenly Unified Korea.’ (Her vision and hope for this year is) to offer her complete devotion towards this. A main example of this is ‘Peace Road,’ which Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon has been advancing. This is a project that starts from Santiago, Chile, passes through Africa’s Cape of Good Hope and North Korea, bearing fruit on the Korean Peninsula, and then connects the world into one family, by excavating an undersea tunnel to Japan. Her hope is to finish this project.”
Please offer a word of greeting as the FFWPU-Korea president to FFWPU believers and the Korean people.
“When seen from the viewpoint of FFWPU leaders worldwide, Korea is a great nation. When you go forth in pride and awe that ‘Korea is truly a nation where heaven conducts its providence, is a blessed nation and the Korean people are the appointed chosen people who can realize world peace by sharing this blessing with the world without keeping it only for itself,’ heaven will bestow further amazing blessings upon you. Rev. Sun Myung Moon prophesized in advance that ‘Korea will become the fruition of the spiritual and material civilizations.’ People would have found his words difficult to believe when he said them amid the ravages of war in the 1950s. However, in fact, our land of Korea became the fruition of civilization that can go on to lead the world spiritually. The Buddhist, Confucianist and Christian civilizations, have blossomed as brilliant flowers in Korea. The culture that can spread to the world going forward is Rev. Moon’s unification ideology. We must go on to educate the world through materials such as sex education materials of Hyojeong that establishes the value of filial piety centering on this. If we offer gratitude, become one and make efforts with the Only Begotten Son and Only Begotten Daughter at the center, Korea is bound to become the nation that can lead the world of the 21st century. I hope that you all have pride and hope.”
