Denmark: UN International Day of Families
By Nobuhiro Igarashi, UPF Denmark
On May 27th we celebrated the UN International Day of Families in the UN City in Copenhagen. The 200 seat Auditorium was filled with peace ambassadors, peace activists, performing artists and others interested in family issues, many families with children.
In the first session there were five presentations of prominent speakers on family issues and the importance of family in society. They touched several topics like “The strength-based parenthood”, Love inside out – conscious parents with high self- esteem creates base for love in the family and the world” and “Make the vulnerable family sustainable” which gave the participants an understanding of the importance of the family in order to create peace and build a sustainable future.
Between the presentations the Department for Sustainable Development in the Municipality of Copenhagen contributed with a band and singer, who sang their own SDG- song as a singalong. A young international renowned pianist from Azerbaijan played piano. With only 15 years she already received numerous 1st prizes in piano competitions all over the world. The audience was awestruck by her skills.
In the break all participants were offered drinks, sandwiches and sweets and representatives from the Municipality of Copenhagen demonstrated sustainable food for the future – roasted insects. Many people curiously gathered around and tasted them.
After the short break there was a cultural program with music, songs and dances mostly by children and young adults. Twelve soloists and groups from Nepal, Azerbaijan, Russia, Estonia, Bulgaria, and Denmark contributed with high level performances mostly related to family issues. Music and dance help us break down barriers of nationality, religion, language and other barriers and all participants felt as belonging to one big family sharing love, joy and peace together. At the end all joined hands and the performing artists led us in a large chain dance and finally everybody gathered for a family photo.
The event was so successful. At first, we felt it was a big challenge to talk about family values because traditional family values have become very weak in Denmark. However, we found a way to bring family issues on the agenda which many people could relate to.
Also, this time we worked together with two other organizations and representatives the Municipality of Copenhagen.
The event was prepared in a relative shor period, but because of Heavenly Parent’s support and True Parents’ victorious foundation we could have such event. Thank you very much, True Mother.
