Slovakia: UN International Day of Peace
By Barbara Grabner, UPF Slovakia
Honoring the UN International Day of Peace, the local branch of UPF organized an event titled “Peace is more than just the Absence of War” in the Slovak capital on September 21, 2017. The invitation letter was sent to numerous persons, including members of parliament, churches and various NGOs. Though the weather was rainy and cold, the rented hall became nicely filled with an attentive audience.
Johannes Stampf from the Unification Thought Institute in Vienna delivered an inspiring lecture about various aspects of peace making, stressing the importance of the family as the cradle of peaceful minds. Afterwards the well- known book author and diplomat Lubos Jurik conveyed his experiences during the leadership conference in Korea last February. He spoke nicely about the founders of UPF, the perfect service and setting and the Sunhak Peace Prize ceremony and laureates.
Mr. Jurik was moved to tears when UPF Secretary General Milos Klas presented him the award “Ambassador of Peace”. The timing was perfect since Lubos Jurik had celebrated his 70th birthday just a few days before. The atmosphere of the gathering was familiar since the majority of guests attend UPF events regularly.
