Germany: “GLORIOUS DAY” European Choir Project

By Heidi Wakayama, FFWPU Germany

This year, our European contribution to the 5th Seonghwa Memorial of True Father will be the song (or better oratorio/cantata) “GLORIOUS DAY” written by Hans Campman and initiated by Jack Corley, our Continental Director.

The main melody was introduced at the German Pentecost Festival in Camberg in the presence of Rev. Jun-Seok An and Rev. Corley. There Hans got the “go ahead” to start the production on a bigger scale with orchestra. Within days he wrote the orchestration in the seclusion of a hotel room in Prague to record it there with the String Ensemble of the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra where the musicians played his music from hand written scores.

The weekend of July 15th and 16th inspired members from the Netherlands, Czech Republic and Germany gathered together in Camberg with Hans to start with the choir practice again reading from his hand-written scores that were still frequently corrected or changed.

Derk van Dorsten, a Dutch brother, stepped in and did an unbelievable job of putting all hand-written music into the computer. Not once, but several times, like full score, individual scores, and corrections and, and, and…

GLORIOUS DAY does not have the backing track of the orchestra all the way through. On August 11th, Hans recorded his piano part that plays throughout the whole song and is fused with the orchestra parts. Derk together with Hans worked their way through several hours of piano recordings to make it into one full backing track. On that foundation, the choir can sing on top of it.

Mind that nobody had any experience of production yet. We payed our dues and learned a lot.

Last weekend (Düsseldorf, Germany, August 19 to 21, 2017), 12 Dutch members and 21 German members met in Düsseldorf Community Center to practice and prepare for the choir recording to be added on top of the piano/orchestra backing track.

It started with the breakdown of the van of the Dutch members on their way to Germany. So they arrived very late on Friday night. The German members came Saturday morning from various cities. All found their accommodations within the Düsseldorf Church Community. The Community prepared and sponsored all meals and helped wherever they could. It was an amazing cooperation. The schedule was tight. One to two hours practice was followed by half an hour break…

The music is 16 minutes long and for those who cannot read music a real challenge.

They have to somehow memorize the song. Everybody was so focused, knowing that we only have this one shot. Make it or break off. Everyone came to their limit at one point. We literally shed a little blood and a lot of sweat and tears in surrender and repentance. Emotions went up and down, opinions clashed – but everybody worked hard to unite.

At Sunday Service, we tried it out and performed the song only to find out that we still needed a lot of section practice. After lunch, Derk, who also takes care of the mixing, explained that basically only 3 people of each voice can be recorded.

Somehow the decision who should be singing became like a casting. Hans wanted everybody to get a chance to be in the recording. The decision was not easy… But in the end brothers and sisters really united for the cause. Everyone was so tired and exhausted when we closed on Sunday night at 10 p.m.

When you listen to the lyrics of the song you feel the content is so deep and prophetic and the music goes deep into your soul. This oratorio wants to comfort True Parents and proclaim True Parents by Their Name. Part of that music was already created in England during the Home Church Providence in the late 1970ies, but we, or the time, were not ready for it yet.

On Monday, the day of the recording started with a prayer for unity and that our voices could convey our love to True Parents in spite of our inadequacies. Our voices were rough from the intense practice of the weekend. Eric, the sound engineer of the studio, eventually learned the song, too, and began to sing along.

When it came to the “Ohh…” and “Ahh…” part he said: “Oh, it sounds like angels.” He really liked us. He and Derk worked very well together and of the many takes of different voices Derk will mix the song to a supportive backing for the choir in Korea.

Thanks to this recording learning the song is easier now, since it is possible to single out the voice you need to learn and just listen to it. Hans, Derk and Heidi stayed in the studio from the beginning to the end. We came at 10:00 a.m. and left at 10 p.m.
